Andy Webster will miss Dundee United’s meeting with Rangers on Sunday under the terms of his loan move from the Scottish champions.

Garry Kenneth will therefore start alongside Darren Dods at the heart of defence, and player-coach Steve Banks fills in for the injured Nicky Weaver.

Rangers striker Kenny Miller:

“We need to improve our performances and start winning games and that’s what we’re focused on.

“We are only a point off the top and we are disappointed we are not top.

“Last week against Hibs was probably the best we’ve played all season.

“We created a lot of chances – as they did – but we had the better chances and should have taken a couple more.”

Dundee United manager Craig Levein:

“It’s a coincidence that we’re playing Rangers three years on and if it’s the same result, I’d be delighted.

“It has been some three years for both clubs. Obviously, we’ve overhauled things here but Rangers have also gone through a lot of changes.

“Paul Le Guen was the manager in that first game but, since then, they’ve appointed Walter and he gave them a massive lift.

“They’ve not had their troubles to seek in recent weeks but, for me, that makes them dangerous.

“They are a wounded animal at the moment and we all know that when a club like Rangers gets criticised, they come out fighting.

“With Walter in charge, they have a man with loads of experience who can lead them through this.”

Walter Smith:

“It was a difficult game. I thought Dundee played very well and stretched us.

“Dundee have got some good players. They have bought players to get them out of the First Division.
“Once we got the second goal, which was a bit fortunate, we seemed to take a bit from that and finished the game strongly.
“Danny Wilson was excellent and I was pleased with Jordan McMillan, while John Fleck finished strongly.”

Dundee will have an unchanged squad for the Co-operative Insurance Cup quarter-final against Rangers at Dens Park.

Defenders David Cowan and Craig McKeown, plus midfielder Colin Cameron, miss out again with groin injuries.

Young defender Danny Wilson will start for Rangers after Lee McCulloch was added to their injury list.

Fellow defender Madjid Bougherra is also still missing through injury along with Ibrox midfielders Pedro Mendes and Kevin Thomson.

Dundee manager Jocky Scott:

“We’ll go and enjoy it. We’ll be up for it and work hard.

“The pressure is not on us for a change because every league game we play, teams raise their game to play against us and this time everyone expects Rangers to win.

“If we can play to our potential, then we have a chance.”

Rangers manager Walter Smith:
“They’ll look forward to a big game against Premier League oppositions, beating Aberdeen in the last round.

“It’ll be a big night for them and one that we ourselves have to go into the proper manner.

“We’ve not lost a cup tie since we came back. We lost a League Cup Final to Celtic, but we’ve managed to win the rest since I’ve come back here, so hopefully we can keep that going.

“We’ve got a number of injuries, but it’ll be an opportunity for our younger players to take part in the game.”

Knee injury victims Madjid Bougherra and Pedro Mendes miss out for Rangers, while Kevin Thomson is a doubt after injuring his shoulder in training.

Kirk Broadfoot and Maurice Edu are still recovering from long-term injuries for the home side.

Hibs boast a full-strength squad for the trip to Glasgow.

The Easter Road side last won at Ibrox in 2007 and are looking to be the first team to beat the champions in the Scottish Premier League this season.

Rangers manager Walter Smith:

“This year I think Hibs will be challenging the likes of Hearts, Dundee United and Aberdeen for European places.

“That’ll be a big target for them this season and I think they’ve shown a capability of pushing for that so far.

“Hibs have had an excellent start to the season and John Hughes already has a good team coming together.

“He has pulled in a couple of players and brought them together with the existing players in his squad really well.”

Hibernian defender Ian Murray:
“We are confident because we’re playing well. But that can turn very quickly if you don’t keep the results going.

“I’ve been to Ibrox and I’ve been hammered before; I’ve been to Ibrox and had results before.

“But it’s getting it down on a consistent basis, going to Rangers one week and going to Parkhead the next week and coming away with points.”

Rangers v Unirea Urziceni Champions League 20 10 09

October 19th, 2009 The Editor Posted in Fixtures No Comments »

Sky Sports | Streams | Rangers Live | Satellites | Free Bets

Match Odds: Rangers 1.73 Draw 3.50 Unirea Urziceni 5.00

Rangers FC have never lost at home to Romanian visitors in a competitive fixture and Walter Smith’s team will be looking to continue that sequence when they play host to FC Unirea Urziceni on Matchday 3.

• The Scottish titleholders are desperate for victory too, after following up their 1-1 draw at VfB Stuttgart with a 4-1 home defeat by Sevilla FC that left them bottom of Group G. They are level on points with their third-placed Romanian counterparts, who responded to a 2-0 loss at Sevilla by posting a 1-1 home stalemate with Stuttgart.

Match background
• FC Steaua Bucureşti provided the opposition on the three previous occasions that Rangers have faced Romanian sides at home in UEFA club competition. Their most recent meeting came in the 1995/96 UEFA Champions League group stage, a 1-1 draw at Ibrox.

• Rangers won the other games, 2-1 in the 1987/88 European Champion Clubs’ Cup quarter-finals and 2-0 in the 1969/70 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup first round.

• Ally McCoist and Ian Durrant, now on the Rangers coaching staff, both played in each leg of that 1987/88 tie.

• In their three away contests with Romanian opponents, Rangers have not fared anywhere near as well, failing to score and losing twice, drawing the other.

• Unirea have never faced a Scottish team in a competitive fixture.

• Before their heavy home loss to Sevilla on 29 September, the Scottish champions had shown impressive form at Ibrox in UEFA club competition. With qualifying ties thrown into the mix, they had suffered only a single defeat in 20 games.

• That sequence included ten wins and nine draws, the only reverse coming in their previous home game before the start of this campaign, a 3-0 defeat by Olympique Lyonnais which consigned them to third in the 2007/08 group stage.

• In the UEFA Champions League, qualifying rounds included, Rangers have lost two of their last 13 home encounters, winning five and drawing six.

Team ties
• Unirea coach Dan Petrescu played for Romania at Hampden Park, Glasgow, in a 1992 UEFA European Championship qualifier in September 1990. Scotland triumphed 2-1 with current Rangers assistant manager McCoist scoring the winner. Petrescu also played in the return fixture eleven months later, a 1-0 win for Romania in Bucharest.

• Petrescu scored for Chelsea FC in a 3-1 victory over Everton FC at Stamford Bridge in May 1999, during Smith’s first season in charge of the Merseyside club.

• Smith got a measure of revenge in 2000/01 as Everton beat a Bradford City AFC side featuring Petrescu 1-0 at Valley Parade in November 2000.

• For the past two summers Unirea have had a pre-season tour of Scotland. This year they played Celtic FC behind closed doors, drawing 1-1, and defeated Greenock Morton FC 3-1. Elsewhere on that tour Unirea lost 2-1 to English side Plymouth Argyle FC at Balgray Playing Fields in Glasgow and beat Ayr United FC 2-1.

• In 2008 Unirea drew 2-2 with Celtic and 1-1 with Livingston FC, as well as beating Saint Johnstone FC 4-0 and Motherwell FC 2-1.

Match Odds: St Johnston 6/1  Draw 3/1  Rangers 1/2

St Johnstone captain Kevin Rutkiewicz may be forced to delay his return to the defence from a knee injury after picking up a slight back strain.

Steven Milne and Peter MacDonald are still missing through injury, but Filipe Morais, Jody Morris and Kevin Moon have returned to training.

Rangers striker Kris Boyd could be a surprise inclusion in the squad despite a fractured eye socket.

Defender Kirk Broadfoot and midfielder Maurice Edu remain sidelined.

St Johnstone manager Derek McInnes:
“My players have shown a confidence. They feel they can mix it with the best in the country.

“Obviously Rangers is a tough ask, they will be buoyant after the Old Firm game.

“I think they are probably stronger as a team than they were last year.

“But the reason we worked so hard over the last year was so we could pit our wits against the likes of Rangers.

“If we can show the same confidence and the same ability that we have shown for the majority of the games then we can do well.”

Rangers 2 – 1 Celtic

October 5th, 2009 The Editor Posted in Fixtures, Match Reports No Comments »

Rangers claimed the first Old Firm derby honours of the season as Celtic old boy Kenny Miller’s first-half brace secured a 2-1 win at Ibrox.

Miller, who spent the 2006/07 season with Celtic, capitalised on poor defending to score twice inside the opening 16 minutes before Aiden McGeady pulled a goal back from the penalty spot.

The reigning champions could have fallen seven points behind their arch-rivals with a defeat on home soil, but enjoyed a dream start by taking the lead after just eight minutes.

Kris Boyd won the ball near the centre circle and his pass sent Miller clear between the Celtic centre-halves to roll his shot beyond Artur Boruc.

And eight minutes later Miller increased the Gers’ advantage as he spun Glenn Loovens and fired a left-footed shot past Boruc after the visiting defence had failed to deal with a long ball.

Celtic were back in the game on 25 minutes when debutant Zheng Zhi was brought down in the box by Sasa Papac and McGeady’s penalty just had enough on it to get past McGregor.

Shaun Maloney missed the Bhoys’ best chance of the second period before Nacho Novo was denied by Boruc when the Spaniard had the opportunity to kill the game off six minutes from time.

Unfamiliar side

Rangers boss Walter Smith was forced to name an unfamiliar side when Madjid Bougherra and Lee McCulloch were both ruled out with a flu bug and Papac was asked to deputise in the heart of defence with David Weir, while youngster Andrew Little was given his first taste of the famous fixture at full-back.

Kevin Thomson also missed out with a knee injury but Miller was able to start up front with Boyd despite fears over a persistent hamstring problem, which will require the attention of a specialist in Germany this week.

Celtic also shuffled their pack. Danny Fox and Barry Robson both picked up knocks in training, meaning a first domestic appearance of the season for Lee Naylor and a debut for new signing Zhi.

Little looked uncomfortable from the outset and allowed Maloney an early chance on goal but McGregor did well to block with his legs to keep the scoreline level in the opening minutes.

Instead, it was Rangers who surged into the lead with just eight minutes gone, taking advantage of shocking defending from Celtic.

Boyd slipped a pass through for Miller, who forced his way past Stephen McManus and Loovens, before dispatching past Boruc into the back of the net as Ibrox erupted.

Celtic then failed in their attempt to win a penalty when Maloney claimed he was fouled in the box by Weir, before picking up a yellow card for diving after going to ground again moments later.

Little had been shifted to centre-forward – the position he plays for Northern Ireland – but his Old Firm debut was over with just 14 minutes on the clock and Novo was thrown into the action.

Miller found the back of the net again two minutes later. This time, a Steven Whittaker ball intended for Boyd was missed by the striker and broke for Miller who shrugged off Loovens before sending a low shot past Boruc.

Dream start

The Scottish champions had enjoyed a dream start to the game but found themselves pegged back after 25 minutes when referee Craig Thomson eventually did point to the penalty spot.

It proved to be a memorable maiden outing for China captain Zhi as he was felled by Papac and McGeady stepped up to claim his first ever goal at Ibrox, despite the best efforts of McGregor, who managed to get a hand to the strike.

There was a further blow for Rangers just before half-time when Boyd was forced out of the action following a clash of heads with Landry N’Guemo, paving the way for Kyle Lafferty to make his first appearance for the club this season after a spell on the sidelines through suspension and injury.

Miller could have claimed his hat-trick shortly after the restart with a ferocious strike which flashed across the face of goal and past the post.

But Celtic also looked dangerous as they chased the equaliser and Scott McDonald tested McGregor with a point-blank shot, which was smothered by the Rangers goalkeeper.

Mark Wilson became the second Celtic player to be booked for simulation, before Maloney squandered a great opportunity to restore parity.

Substitute Pat McCourt’s cross found Wilson out on the right and he teed up the shot for Maloney but he rifled inches past the post when he looked certain to score.

At the other end, Whittaker picked out Novo at the back post with a long ball but he nodded past the upright amid claims of being pushed, before seeing his attempt to lob Boruc swatted out of the danger area by the Celtic goalkeeper.
