Rangers interested in £2m Arzo deal
Walter Smith, the Rangers manager, may be trying to grab another Spanish bargain with a £2m move for Villarreal centre-back Cesar Arzo Amposta.
The defender could form an all-Spanish central defensive pairing with Carlos Cuellar, who was a huge hit at Ibrox last season. The player, better known as Arzo, was a key part of the Spanish Under-21 team, but struggled to hold down a regular slot at Villarreal. He has been loaned out for the past two seasons to Spanish sides Recreativo de Huelva and Real Murcia.
Arzo can also play as a defensive midfielder, and the Ibrox club are said to face competition from the two La Liga loan clubs as well as Romanian side CFR Cluj for his services.
Villarreal are keen to keep the 22-year-old, who has two years remaining on his contract.
The player seems determined to stay but is keen to get his future moving. “I want an early decision,” he said. “I like playing with Villarreal, but if this is not possible then I want this resolved as the current situation is not comfortable for me.”
Rangers are also keen on Danny Shittu, the Watford centre-back, who is also being tracked by Celtic.
The Ibrox side meanwhile confirmed the date of their home Champions League second qualifying round tie with Santa Coloma or FBK Kaunas. Walter Smith’s men will host the winners of the first round qualifier in the first leg at Ibrox on Wednesday July 30, with kick-off at 7.45pm.
Rangers need to win through two qualifying rounds to reach the group stages, where they would join Celtic.
The ECA also appointed Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as its chairman.
McClelland was joined as one of three vice-chairmen by AC Milan’s Umberto Gandini and Barcelona president Joan Laporta. Michel Centenaro moves from the UEFA competitions department to take over the role as general secretary.
Laporta said his role would be to strengthen the clubs’ relationship with UEFA and FIFA and the European Union. “It’s vital that the clubs have a role in the decision-making process of football,” he said. “We must have a better calendar in terms of releasing players for national teams and avoid too many friendlies.”
